This year, the aforementioned VDU quartet won the Lithuanian student 3×3 basketball tournament and the SELL Games 3×3 basketball tournament held in Vierumäki, Finland. In August, the VDU team became European university 3×3 basketball champions in Salerno, Italy, and in July, they won the FISU Rhine-Ruhr (Germany) World University Games.
Twelve of the strongest student teams in the world participate in the FISU World Championship. One place is reserved for the host team, one for the previous world champions, and two for the strongest 3×3 student basketball players from each continent.
