The Vytautas Magnus University (VDU) team triumphed at the FISU World University 3×3 Basketball Championship in Brazil and remained the best team on the planet for the third year in a row.
The quartet of Tito Januševičius, Augustinas Mikštas, Gabrielius Čelka, and Rokas Jocius defeated the team from Paulista University in Brazil 21:12 in the final.
In the semi-finals, the VDU basketball players defeated the University of Valencia from Spain 21:9, and earlier in the quarter-finals, they defeated Payame Noor University from Iran 21:13.
Dainius Novickas’s team did not falter in the group stage either, defeating the University of Melbourne team from Australia 21:12 in their first match on Saturday and the Anáhuac Querétaro University team from Mexico 21:15 in their second match.
At the awards ceremony after the final match, R. Jocys was named the most valuable player of the championship.
Last year, VDU basketball players triumphed at the FISU World Championships in Xiamen, China. They achieved the same feat the year before, when they became world champions for the first time in history in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
This year, the aforementioned VDU quartet won the Lithuanian student 3×3 basketball tournament and the SELL Games 3×3 basketball tournament held in Vierumäki, Finland. In August, the VDU team became European university 3×3 basketball champions in Salerno, Italy, and in July, they won the FISU Rhine-Ruhr (Germany) World University Games.
Twelve of the strongest student teams on the planet participated in the FISU World Championship. One spot was reserved for the host team, one for the previous world champions, and two for the strongest 3×3 student basketball players from each continent.
