On Thursday, Kaunas-VDU volleyball players began their performance in the CEV Challenge Cup tournament.
In the first match of the first stage at the VDU Valdo Adamkaus Sports Center, the Kaunas team lost to Myrė’s Oksyl (Norway) after a close battle, 2-3 (25:21, 17:25, 21:25, 25:22, 9:15) to Myrė’s Oksyl (Norway) team.
The match began with a fierce battle, but the Kaunas-VDU volleyball players, passionately supported by their fans, managed to win the first set and take the lead. Later, the visitors took the initiative and won the second set quite confidently. In the third set, Oksyl again had the upper hand, and although the Kaunas team fought until the end, their opponents did not squander their lead.
The fourth set was evenly matched, but in the end, Kaunas-VDU took advantage of their opponents’ mistakes and evened the overall score.
Unfortunately, in the fifth set, the Norwegians immediately pulled ahead, and the hosts were unable to respond with a successful finish.
Martyna Paukštytė scored 18 points for the Kaunas club, Neringa Kačinaitė scored 11, Vaiva Valionytė, recognized as the best player on the Kaunas team, scored 10, Eglė Makauskaitė scored 9, Miglė Šidlauskaitė scored 6, and and 5 by Vilūnė Rauluševičiūtė.
Norwegian national team member Ragni Knudsen played unstoppably for the opponents. She scored 44 points. This is undoubtedly one of the most impressive performances in the history of this tournament. Karolina Lokaas scored 10 points.
“The Norwegians started playing faster in the second set, and it took us some time to adjust to the pace they set. Our opponents are older and have more experience. Their attack was really very good. In the fourth set, we managed to keep up with our opponents, but overall, they were better this time. In the end, we lacked a more varied attack, perhaps a little bit of competitive spirit and aggression,” said Kaunas-VDU coach Viltė Bogdanovič.
The return match in Norway will be played on November 5.
“Of course, the Norwegians will have the home advantage, but there is always hope. Before the game, both teams have equal chances. We will have to keep up with our opponents’ speed and take advantage of our chances,” emphasized V. Bogdanovič.
