In the last match of this season’s TOPsport-sponsored Lithuanian Football A League, Kaunas Žalgiris and Gargždai Banga faced off in Kaunas. Unused opportunities led to a 0-0 draw.
The match began with an unpleasant incident – in the second minute of the game, Eduardas Jurjonas suffered an injury and was forced to leave the field.
In the 24th minute, Fabien Ourega ran one-on-one with the goalkeeper after a precise high pass, but Deividas Malžinskas prevented him from scoring.
There were no serious chances for the rest of the first half – the ball ended up in the goalkeepers’ hands or near the goal after shots.
The hosts came closest to scoring the first goal immediately after the break. Tautvydas Burdzilauskas demonstrated his speed and made a dangerous pass, but Amine Benchaib hit the left post.
In the 59th minute, Rokas Filipavičius had a good chance to break through when he found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Tomas Švedkauskas, but his left-footed shot was inaccurate. After several episodes, the Gargždai team failed to take advantage of an even better opportunity – Ignas Venckus failed to convert an 11-meter penalty.
No one managed to score a goal before the referee’s final whistle. The match ended in a draw. Banga, who had a good chance to defeat the champions, finished the season in 8th place in the tournament table. Meanwhile, Kaunas Žalgiris added to their tally once again and ended the season with 75 points.
