On Sunday, Vytautas Magnus University (VDU) student Rūta Meilutytė competed in the 50 m breaststroke final at the European Short Course Swimming Championships (25 m) in Lublin, Poland, completing the distance in 29.22 seconds and winning the silver medal.
The gold medal went to Eneli Jefimova of Estonia (28.81 seconds), who is in impressive form and broke the championship record. The bronze medal went to Florine Gaspard of Belgium (29.34 seconds).
The world record in the 50 m breaststroke (25 m pool) belongs to R. Meilutytė – in 2022 in Melbourne, she covered the distance in 28.37 seconds.
“Professional sport would not be sport if there were no places. I am happy with this place,” said R. Meilutytė after the final.
Another VDU student, Kotryna Teterevkova, covered the distance in 2 min. 19.30 sec. in the final of the 200 m breaststroke event at the European Short Course Swimming Championships (25 m) last Friday, breaking her own Lithuanian record and winning the bronze medal at the European Championships.

The gold medal in the final went to Germany’s Anna Elendt (2 min. 18.16 sec.), while Britain’s Angharad Evans took silver (2 min. 18.90 sec.).
“I’m completely speechless right now because I had a temperature of 38 degrees during lunch, and we were debating… whether to skip it or just go for it. I’m still trying to figure out what happened. Sometimes I doubt myself too much, wondering where I can actually do better,” said K. Teterevkova, who felt “like in a dream” after the final.
