World’s strongest student pentathletes to compete at VMU Sports Centre
The FISU World University Championship Modern Pentathlon will take place at the Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) Sports Centre from 20-24 August. The strongest student pentathletes from 19 countries around the world will gather at the VMU President Valdas Adamkus Sports Centre in Akademija, Kaunas district. The championship will feature 11 Lithuanian athletes, including Elzė Adomaitytė, Titas Puronas, and Paulius Vagnorius, who have won numerous medals in top-level international competitions. Anastasija Chafizova (Sport Studies) and Anastasija Kančytė (Pedagogy) will represent VMU in the championship.
The world’s top student pentathletes, including Lithuanians, will compete in both individual and team events at the championships. In the individual events, athletes will have to complete an obstacle course as well as a running and shooting segment. In the relay races, team members will choose which event they want to specialize in, while in mixed relays, both athletes will complete the same course: the women will start the race and then pass the baton to the men. This format is approved by the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM).
The only previous FISU World Student Modern Pentathlon Championships were held in 2018 in Budapest, Hungary. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, two subsequent events were canceled in other countries, making the championships in Kaunas the first in six years. In Lithuania, the last student sports event of this level took place 18 years ago, when the FISU World University Rowing Championships were held in 2006.
