Augustas Šlyteris – European Universities Judo Champion, VMU Rises to Second Place in Europe

Warsaw, Poland – From August 22 to 25, the EUSA European Universities Combat Championships took place, where Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) claimed yet another gold medal. In judo, in the under-90 kg weight category, VMU student Augustas Šlyteris triumphed by defeating Gergely Nerpel of the University of Physical Education in Hungary in the final bout.

Šlyteris’ triumph and other VMU performances

Throughout the championship, Augustas Šlyteris displayed a confident fighting style, patience, and solid defense, and in the final encounter he did not miss the opportunity to prove his superiority against one of the strongest opponents. Effective use of chances and cold-blooded decision-making secured him the highest honor – the title of European champion.

Alongside Šlyteris, two more VMU students competed in Warsaw. Matas Norkevičius (under 66 kg) ended his campaign in the first round, while Augis Raulušonis (under 73 kg) was eliminated in the third. Although their paths were shorter, their participation highlights the wide range of sports represented by VMU athletes.

The fifth VMU medal at the EUSA Championships

Šlyteris’ gold medal is already the fifth for VMU at this summer’s EUSA championships. In total, the university has collected three gold medals – in men’s 5×5 basketball, men’s 3×3 basketball, and now in judo – as well as a silver in women’s beach volleyball and a bronze in badminton.

This performance lifted VMU to second place in the overall EUSA European university ranking. At the moment, only four universities in Europe hold three gold medals, with the University of Strasbourg (France) leading solely due to having more silver medals.

An impressive summer for VMU sports

The year 2025 is becoming one of the most successful summers in VMU’s sporting history. The university dominated the SELL Student Games, where it won the highest number of medals among Baltic universities, celebrated triumphs in EUSA championships, and VMU athletes representing Lithuania also excelled at the Universiade in Germany. There, they returned with gold in men’s 3×3 basketball, bronze in men’s 5×5 basketball, bronze in the mixed quadruple sculls (Mix4x) rowing event, while swimmers and judokas recorded strong finishes.

These results firmly establish VMU as the most athletic university in Lithuania and one of the leaders in the entire Baltic region, demonstrating the university’s consistent contribution to the development of student sport and international success.
