On September 12-16, the EUSA European University Table Tennis Championships were held in Burdur, Turkey, where Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) was represented by the women’s table tennis team. Three girls wore VMU jerseys at the Old Continent University Table Tennis Championships: Vitalija Venckutė, Eglė Jankauskienė, and Kornelija Ščiglaitė.
The duo of E. Jankauskienė and V. Venckutė advanced to the quarterfinals of the Old Continent championship, but lost 0:3 to the duo from the University of Paris (France) and finished fifth in the European championship.
Prior to that, the VMU representatives defeated the representatives of the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia) 3:0 in the round of 32 and the students of University College London (Great Britain) 3:1 in the round of 16.
In the women’s team competition, VMU students finished fifth. In the group stage, the girls defeated Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University (Turkey) 3:0 and lost 1:3 to Pécs University (Hungary). However, in the quarterfinals, the VMU team lost 0:3 to the eventual champions, the University of Economics in Wrocław (Poland), and had to settle for fifth place.
The Lithuanian women were also unsuccessful in the individual competitions. E. Jankauskienė confidently defeated Vi Viola Phan Thi Xuan from Semmelweis University (Hungary) 3:0 in the preliminary match, but lost 0:3 to Anna Wegrzyna from the University of Economics in Wrocław (Poland) in the round of 32.
After a tough preliminary match, V. Venckutė lost 2:3 to Marta Vukelič from the University of Zagreb (Croatia) and did not advance to the round of 32. K. Ščiglaitė also had one individual match, losing 1:3 to Elifnilai Ayaz from Suleyman Demirel University (Turkey) in the preliminary round.
